workshop: Microwave Raku

RAKU is an ancient Japanese firing technique that involves cutting off the oxygen supply during firing, creating what we call a “reduction atmosphere.” This results in a physical-chemical transformation that gives rise to metallic and pearlescent effects, along with surprising color changes on the surfaces of the pieces.

With this workshop, ceramic artist Montse Llanas (@montsellanasceramica) presents an alternative version of the technique: Microwave Raku. During this two-day intensive, we will explore the world of Raku from a contemporary and surprising perspective.

🔹 We’ll work with different types of clay and create small pieces that will serve as canvases to experiment with various techniques.
🔹 We’ll prepare our own glazes.
🔹 We’ll fire pieces in microwave and small-format kilns to witness, in real time, how fire transforms matter.

Sunday, June 22nd – 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM:

• Glaze preparation

• Glazing of the pieces

• Theory on kiln construction

• Firing the pieces

• Analysis and discussion of the results

If you’re looking for a creative experience that’s out of the ordinary, this workshop is for you! No previous experience is required.

In the photos, you can see examples of the types of pieces that can be made. The workshop focuses on creating the ceramic pieces (it does not include assembly into jewelry pieces).

THIS COURSE INCLUDES:

• All necessary materials for the Raku techniques taught

• Firing of 6 to 8 pieces per student (dimensions approx. 6 cm wide by 3 cm high)
