Ceramic course – complete version
This is what you’ll learn in this course
Always wanting to give it a try… With that in mind we designed for you a complete ceramic course with everything you need to be autonomous and produce any ceramic piece.
You’ll learn hand building techniques (working the 2 main techniques: coiling and slabs); followed by learning to throw (we’ll go from beginner to advanced – from the initial pieces such as bowls and cylinders to larger pieces, narrow neck, pieces with lids, etc.). Then we’ll introduce you to an ancient technique of firing pieces, called Raku. Followed by the cherry on the cake – you’ll have access to our atelier to practice everything you have learned.
Program and dates:
Masterclass kilns and glazes: Saturday 4th October, from 10am to 4pm.
We’ll teach you all about loading kilns (first and second firings), how to prepare and alter an industrial glaze. Different techniques to apply glazes and it’s results.
Wheel throwing module I: Monday 6th to Thursday 9th Oct, from 10am to 2pm.
You’ll learn to center (a must in the wheel process) and how to throw various forms: cylinders (which is the basis of any thrown shape), bowls, cups and pieces with handles. We will fire a selection of your best 6 pieces (chosen by you). All the pieces are functional – you can use them daily (and they are not afraid of microwave nor dishwasher!).
Wheel throwing module II: Tuesday 14th to Thursday 16th Oct, from 10am to 2pm.
Let’s reinforce what you have learnt on module I; teaching you to center more quantity of clay and making larger pieces. You’ll learn to throw and trim closed pieces, narrow neck, etc. Through more complex projects you’ll strengthen your knowledge on the wheel. You can choose 1 piece to be fired.
Raku with microwave: Sat 18th from 10am to 2pm and Sun 19th from 10am to 6:30pm.
Your first contact with this ancient Japanese technique of firing pieces: Raku. With the unique feature of being able to be done in your own kitchen. We’ll make pieces (small – between 6 and 8 pieces), apply glazes, and fire them using the Raku technique. Raku with a microwave: Saturday, the 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 19th, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Hand building module: Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July, from 10am to 3pm.
In this course you’ll learn the 2 most used hand building techniques : coiling and slabs. We’ll make a breakfast set with mug, plate, bowl and vase. We’ll fire all your pieces.
Glazing class: Friday date to be confirmed, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
We’ll teach you to glaze the selected pieces produced in the hand building and wheel workshops.
Access to the studio’s infrastructure to practice what you have learned: Monday 6th to Friday 31st Oct, from 11am to 6pm. You’ll be gifted with 1 pack of stoneware. If you’d like to fire any piece made during your practice time, we can calculate its corresponding cost for you.
