Others work with the way we see the world. Sophie Aguilera does both.

Through porcelain, Sophie creates delicate floral sculptures that seem to suspend time. Her work captures the fleeting beauty of a flower at its peak and transforms it into something lasting, creating a dialogue between permanence and impermanence, nature and object, observation and memory.

With a background in visual arts and sculpture, her practice draws inspiration from the tradition of still life while bringing a distinctly contemporary perspective. Every petal, fold and detail emerges from careful observation and an intimate understanding of the material.

On July 25–26 and again on October 17–18, Sophie will lead an intensive Porcelain Flowers Workshop at our studio. More than a technical course, it is an invitation to slow down, observe closely and explore the creative possibilities of one of ceramics’ most refined materials.

We spoke with Sophie about creativity, patience, nature, and the fascinating process of transforming something as fleeting as a flower into an object that can last a lifetime.

Sophie, your background is rooted in visual arts and sculpture. How did you discover ceramics, and what made you stay?

I’ve always been interested in representing objects and natural forms. I came to ceramics through sculpture, looking for a medium that would allow me to combine observation, construction and materiality. When I discovered porcelain, I felt I had found a language of my own. It is delicate, demanding and incredibly sensitive, capable of expressing remarkable subtlety.

Was there a particular moment when you realised ceramics would become a fundamental part of your artistic practice?

I think it happened when I understood that ceramics was not simply a technique, but a way of thinking. The transformation a piece undergoes—from soft clay to fired object—introduces time as part of the work itself. That aspect continues to fascinate me today.

Looking back, what has ceramics taught you that other artistic mediums could not?

Patience, above all. We live in a culture of immediacy, and ceramics forces you to respect the rhythm of the material. It has also taught me how to embrace uncertainty. You never have complete control over the outcome, and often that is where the most interesting discoveries happen.

Your work reveals an extraordinary attention to detail and observation. How does looking closely influence your creative process?

Observation is a fundamental part of my practice. Before modelling a flower, I spend a great deal of time studying it—how a petal folds, how a stem curves, how a form changes as it matures or fades. I believe creativity often begins with learning how to truly see.

When you begin a new piece, what usually comes first: an idea, an emotion, or something you’ve observed?

Most often, it begins with observation. Sometimes I encounter a flower whose structure intrigues me; other times, the starting point is more conceptual. What matters is allowing enough space for the process itself to reveal things that were not apparent at the beginning.

You work with a material that requires patience and a willingness to accept the unexpected. What is your relationship with mistakes and uncertainty?

Over time I’ve learned not to see them as negative. Porcelain is a living material, and there is always an element of unpredictability. Sometimes a small distortion or an unexpected result during firing can bring something to a piece that I could never have planned.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone hoping to develop their creativity, what would it be?

Spend more time observing and less time judging. Many people think creativity is about constantly producing new ideas, but for me it begins with curiosity and attention.

Flowers are central to your work. What continues to inspire you about them after so many years?

Flowers are an inexhaustible subject. They embody beauty, transformation and fragility all at once. Every species has its own character and architecture. I never feel as though I am making the same piece twice.

Many of your works seem to preserve a particularly fragile moment in nature. Are you interested in the tension between the ephemeral and the permanent?

Very much so. A flower may live only for a few days, while a porcelain object can survive for centuries. I am fascinated by that paradox: using a permanent material to preserve something inherently temporary.

Your flowers are incredibly realistic, yet they convey far more than botanical accuracy. What are you hoping to express through them?

I am not interested in simply copying a flower. I want to capture a presence, a sensation, a memory. Realism is a tool, but the ultimate goal is to create an emotional connection with the viewer.

About the Workshop

This year you’ll be teaching two Porcelain Flower Workshops at our studio. What inspired you to share this aspect of your practice with others?

Teaching is a wonderful way of sharing years of research and experience. I enjoy seeing how each participant interprets the techniques differently and discovers their own voice through the material.

What will participants learn during the two-day workshop?

We will explore a variety of techniques for constructing porcelain flowers, from preparing and handling the material to building petals, assembling forms and refining details. Beyond technique, we will also focus on observation, composition and translating natural forms into ceramic language.

Beyond technical skills, what do you hope participants take away from the experience?

I hope they leave with greater confidence and, perhaps more importantly, with a new way of looking at the world. If they observe a flower more carefully after the workshop than they did before, I will feel the workshop has achieved its purpose.

Porcelain can feel intimidating for many people. What would you say to someone who is considering the workshop but feels unsure about their skills?

I would tell them not to be afraid. Porcelain has a reputation for being difficult, but it is also one of the most rewarding materials to work with. The workshop is designed to support each participant, regardless of their level of experience.

Is the workshop intended only for experienced ceramicists, or can beginners enjoy it too?

Anyone with curiosity and a willingness to learn can enjoy it. Those with ceramic experience will certainly deepen their knowledge, but no previous experience is required to benefit from the workshop.

Finally, why should someone spend a weekend making porcelain flowers?

Because it is an opportunity to slow down, observe and work with your hands. For two days, you immerse yourself in a creative process that combines technique, sensitivity and attention to detail. There is something truly special about transforming a fleeting flower into an object that can accompany you for a lifetime.

Sophie, thank you for answering our questions! we’re looking forward to seeing you at ElTorn.

My pleasure! see you soon!

In a world driven by speed and constant distraction, Sophie Aguilera’s work invites us to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the beauty of small things. Her porcelain flowers are far more than technical exercises; they are a celebration of attention, patience, and the ability to transform something fleeting into something lasting.

If you would like to experience her creative process first-hand and learn the art of porcelain flower making, Sophie will be leading two intensive workshops at ElTorn on July 25–26 and October 17–18.

Learn more and reserve your place here.

Warmly,
Paula

Sophie Aguilera: Porcelain Flowers, Observation, and the Art of Preserving the Ephemeral Some artists work with materials.
